dotProject is a volunteer supported Project Management application. There is no "company" behind this project, it is managed, maintained, developed and supported by a volunteer group and by the users themselves.
For more about the product, what it does, etc please follow the links to the doc site at the top of site.
The software is free to anyone who would like to download it. Day to day support is provided free by volunteers.
If you would like to see the system in operation - use the Demo link in the modules list to the left top of the site.
If you would like to download the package use the downloads link on the top right. Please be aware that the CVS snapshot is guaranteed to be UNSTABLE and should not be used on a production site or if you are not willing to have to do some work at the code level.
If you are looking for support, to ask a question or to check to see if issues have been raised by others - use the support link at the top right to access our support forums. PLEASE do not send Private Messages to the site admins or other participants on the site - this just means that you are trying to jump the priority queue, that any answers you received are selfishly then not shared with the rest of the user community OR that you may ask the wrong person who cannot help you. Priority Support is available at a cost - login to the support forums and use your UserCP from there to Subscription details and pricing.
If you have a bug or a Feature Suggestion that you would like to log - use the bugs link at the top right of the site. PLEASE check that the issue hasn't been logged before to save your hardworking admin a lot of time and trouble. Mantis has recently been updated to include multiple projects - use the drop down list at the top right hand side of the screen in the bug tracker to select the correct project as per the news article on the front of the Bugs and Suggestions system.
If you are looking for documentation, hints and tips - please use the doc site link at the top right. Please DO NOT use comments either here or on the documentation site, to ask questions or raise issues - the chances of anybody finding your comment are pretty remote because that's what the forums are for.

Introduction to PM: What's So Great About Project Management

===============
Trying to manage a project without project management software can turn into a Godzilla-like apocalypse quickly. Even with the best intentions and strategy, a wrong turn can quickly demolish months of work, and a misstep can mean the small-business equivalent of losing San Francisco. Taming this project gone bad can be a horrific task—especially when you have to pay a lot of money to do it.
godzilla meme
Fear not.
Small businesses have a variety of possibilities for organizing their projects from the deep. And the best part? Most of these options are free.
I’ve compiled a list of the six best free project management software applications. Depending on the size of your business, these software solutions cost a total of nothing. Let’s start with number six.

6. Bitrix24

Bitrix24 is a project management system entirely free for up to 12 users, with an option to upgrade to more for $99 per month. The features rival those of PM’s current go-to software: BaseCamp.
Bitrix24
Pros
Users can choose whether to use Bitrix24 in the cloud or self-host on the company’s own server. The PM features are outstanding: Bitrix24 offers Gantt charts, layered task options, time tracking and management, and even employee workload planning.
Bitrix24 also makes real-time communication a breeze with group chat, videoconferencing, and instant messenger. It also acts as a DropBox alternative—the free version offers 5GB of cloud storage for easy document sharing—and, for just 25¢ a month, businesses can add an additional gigabyte.
Cons
Small businesses may struggle with the free version of Bitrix24 solely because of its limitation on user profiles—and the jump to $99 per month may be a non-starter if you’re cash-strapped.

5. Trello

Trello costs a grand total of zero dollars and no cents. They use a method calledKanban, a project management system developed by a former Toyota vice president, Taiichi Ohno, which allows users to move cards—representative of tasks—to create a visual representation of where a project is in development.
Trello
Pros
If a more intuitive project management software option exists than Trello, I’ll dress up as a burrito and beg for free Chipotle.
A quick peek at the alignment of the cards lets users know how far along a project is—and what to work on next. While the front of the card has little more than a task label, the back can be filled with all kinds of information—like who’s working on the task, when it’s due, and what parts of the task have already been completed with a simple checklist.
Cons
Because of Trello’s emphasis on simplicity, it’s missing a few key features. There isn’t a good way to look at a project with high detail—for example, it does not offer an option to see task lists broken down by user or due date.

4. 2-Plan Project Management Software

From the glut of open-source software, 2-Plan stands out. The system has three symbiotic programs—all free:
  • 2-Plan Desktop, a project-management system.
  • 2-Plan Team, a web-based project management tool with multiple hosting options.
  • Work 2-gether, a Scrum-based task management board for one-team projects.
All of these options are free, but you may choose to pay for additional extensions.
2 Plan
Pros
2-Plan is a behemoth when it comes to features. On the desktop version alone, project managers can create an animated graphical WBS, craft project milestones, implement top-down and bottom-up planning, and build project control systems.
2-Plan Team makes it easy to coordinate with off-campus teams and track time spent on tasks—and it integrates seamlessly with 2-Plan Desktop. Work 2-Gether is similar to Trello in that it uses the Kanban system, but it also has the ability to expand into a greater workchart.
2 Plan Work Together
Cons
2-Plan offers a lot of features that can quickly get overwhelming for teams with little time for their extensive manuals. Furthermore, the free option can be limiting. Work 2-gether, for example, only permits businesses to use two taskboards for freeand team size is limited to three.
Thankfully, their pro accounts are reasonably priced—businesses only have to pay $15 a month to fully upgrade Work 2-gether.

3. Asana

Based on their 40,000 customers and 400,000 users, Asana is one of the most popular project management apps available—and best of all, for up to 15 users, it’s free.
Asana
Pros
Dustin Moskovitz, the co-founder of Facebook, also designed Asana. True to the aesthetic and simplicity of the most popular social network, Asana is an intuitive task-management system that works best for teams seeking real-time interaction.
Asana allows its users to visualize their goals, track their time, assign priority to their tasks, and get updates on the project right in the program. It also has a calendar function to graph the team’s tasks right onto the dashboard.
Cons
Asana’s plain design comes with a dearth of features, including progress tracking and offline use.

2. GanttProject

GanttProject is another open-source free project scheduling and management tool.Reviewers have compared this heavy-hitting application to Microsoft Project—both in terms of features offered and complexity. This system can generate Gantt and PERT charts, produce reports in HTML and PDF formats, and offers versatile scheduling and time management tools.
GanttProject
Pros
There is no limit to what you can do with GanttProject. The management platform allows users to quickly create a structured schedule for any project. It offers task assignment and milestone implementation. The open-source software also enables project managers to identify problem areas in the workflow so that companies can set goals for improvement.
Cons
I would not recommend GanttProject to people who are unfamiliar with project management software. Many have found it overwhelming—and support is largelyleft to its forums.

1. Producteev

Producteev offers its clients unlimited users and projects for free—and unless your small business needs Outlook integration, personalized support, or visual customization, there’s no reason to upgrade to Pro.
Among its many features, it permits users to create tasks that belong in multiple task lists, offers real-time communication between users, features results measurement and progress tracking, and lets users turn emails into tasks with a few simple clicks.
Producteev
Pros
Producteev is incredibly easy to maneuver—almost every function that Producteev offers is self-explanatory. It can filter tasks by people, project, status, due date, priority and more. The application also offers simple file sharing through attachments or DropBox.
Cons
Producteev has few drawbacks. Some missing features—like time tracking and integrated billing software—may be unfavorable.

More?

For all of the free options available, many small businesses may want to consider upgrading to paid versions for more users, expanded functionality, and better customer support. Thankfully, most of the leading products are pretty cheap.Smartsheet, for example, offers their Team membership at $39 a month, andMavenlink offers its basic services for just $4 a month per user.
What free or open-source project management tools have worked well for you? Were there any programs that I didn’t include? Share them in the comments below!

Introduction to PM: What's So Great About Project Management

I. Contents of project management open source software

Last year, Opensource.com covered some popular open source project management tools (ProjectLibre, ]project-open[, and OpenProject.) We found these articles to be valuable to our readers, so here we take a look forward at what we think 2014 holds for these open source project management tools.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but each tool listed here has been deliberately selected based on a rich feature set.

ProjectLibre

In our interview with Marc O’Brien, co-founder of ProjectLibre, we featured a tool with support for task management, resource allocation, tracking, Gantt charts, and much more. ProjectLibre is a good alternative to a commercial software product like Microsoft Project.
In December 2013, ProjectLibre released version 1.5.8, and a full rewrite of the codebase towards an Open Services Gateway Initiative (OSGI) modular architecture is ongoing. This will allow connector modules for better integration with enterprise solutions such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).
ProjectLibre is a Java based client tool. During their 2014 Q1 this year, they will release version 2.0. It is not clear yet when the SaaS version will become available.
ProjectLibre was awarded InfoWorld's "Best of Open Source" in 2013 and ranks in my personal top 3 favorite open source project management tools.

LibrePlan

LibrePlan is a web based application, making project management available to not just the project manager, but the entire project team, and if necessary across organisations. LibrePlan is licensed under the AGPL. This is another full featured tool supporting resource allocation, Gantt charts, financials, and more. These features coupled with a web based application make LibrePlan a great collaboration platform.
LibrePlan ranks in my personal top 3 favorite open source project management tools because of its modern design and balanced user interface, as well as, good and complete documentation, built in reporting, and professional support.
View all of the features on this page.
I did not note any newly released features or version release dates for 2014.

OpenProject

"Team collaboration redesigned" is how we introduced our interview with Birthe Lindenthal, Chairperson of the OpenProject Foundation's Board of Directors.
OpenProject is released under the GNU General Public License Version 3 and runs on Ruby on Rails. I happen to agree with their tagline that this tool has "everything you need for collaboration" to support the entire project life cycle. There are two big features that deserve to be highlighted: OpenProject supportsAccessibility and a Scrum plugin supporting Agile methods and Scrum teams.
OpenProject is currently working on a major upgrade ready for release during 2014 Q1. Version 3.0 will support Ruby 2.0 and Rails 3.2. See their full roadmap here.
OpenProject ranks in my personal top 3 favorite open source project management tools because of their user interface, documentation, and rich feature set.

]project-open[

In our interview with Frank Bergmann, founder of ]project-open[, he gave readers insight into what this tool, ]po[ for short, is meant to do:
"We're not dealing with individual project managers, but focus on organizations with 10 - 1,000 users that earn their money by executing projects."
]po[ is said to be used by over 6,000 companies worldwide. A full installation is based on over 100 open source packages including a Linux distro, Postgre SQL, TCL as it’s main language, Perl for system integration, and many more. It supports integration with 30+ packages such as OpenLDAP, OpenOffice, ProjectLibre, and others.
]po[ is an enterprise project management tool with many features, including support for Agile. The software is released under a mixed source model, or a "dual license", meaning that at it’s core it is open source, with additional modules released under a commercial license. ]po[ runs as client software on both Windows and Linux, depending on a stack of open source packages.
In 2014, ]po[ hopes to release version 4.2 which will bring a full AJAX GUI, integration between collaboration features and project management, and more.

Redmine

Redmine is a web-based project management tool that I actively use. It's powerful, runs on Ruby and Rails, and is licensed under GNU General Public License v2 (GPL).
Where it lacks enterprise features, compared with the other project management tools I've mentioned above, it has strong web applications. Along with basic project management features, this Redmine includes a wiki, repository, and issue tracker. View the full feature list here.
Redmine also has an advantage in access: it is available to project managers, other team members, as well as, the clients.
In 2014, the Redmine roadmap shows a steady flow of releases that continue to improve the quality of the tool.

BONUS TOOL: Agilefant

Agilefant, as its name implies, is based on Agile methods. However, this open source project management tool also supports product portfolios, projects, sprints, and multi-team development. See the full feature set in the Agilefant user guide.
Agilefant offers a free and open source product that can be downloaded and deployed into your own private cloud. They also offer a SaaS solution. In 2014, they will add a paid service.
Agilefant runs on Java, Tomcat, and MySQL. The source code and license can be found on GitHub.
